It is not often that I make any effort to image the moon but it has been a very bad April weather wise and there was no chance for any deep sky imaging. With some breaks in the clouds - there was a chance to image the Pink Moon which presented a further opportunity to see if I could do a colour image. One does not normally see these colours with the naked eye - but they are there! (The bottom mono image was actually done on the 26th and the data for the colour one done on the 27th)
In the 1930s the Maine Farmer's Almanac began publishing American Indian Moon names for the months of the year. According to this almanac, as the full Moon in April, this is the Pink Moon, named after the herb moss pink, also known as creeping phlox, moss phlox, or mountain phlox. The plant is native to the eastern United States and is one of the earliest widespread flowers of spring.
