NGC 1788 is a reflection nebula in the constellation of Orion – seen here at top left of the image. It is an unusual reflection nebula (bluish white) surrounded by a glowing red ring of hydrogen gas. The stars inside the nebula are only about a million years old, which is very young compared to most stars. The ring of glowing hydrogen gas is energized by nearby hot, massive stars. NGC 1788 is rather sharply defined on its southwest perimeter where it is flanked by the dark nebula known as Lynds 1616. Lynds 1616 is apparently part of NGC 1788.
